MAJOR PROGRESS TRANSFORMS BALLARAT BASE HOSPITAL SITE
The Allan Labor Government’s landmark $655 million Ballarat Base Hospital Redevelopment is progressing at pace, with foundation works for the new multi-level hospital tower and emergency department now underway.
Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison, Member for Eureka Michaela Settle and Member for Rippon Martha Haylett today visited the busy site to check out the progress on the third and final stage of construction, with piling, bulk excavation and demolition works in full swing – getting the site ready for works to begin on the new tower.
With existing buildings to be demolished to make way for the new tower, the project is embracing a more sustainable approach to construction, recycling at least 95 per cent of demolition materials, including more than 11 tonnes of concrete.
Bulk excavation of soil and rock will continue into the middle of the year, with concrete for the basement level of the new tower to be progressively poured in the coming months.
Once complete, the hospital tower will be home to a new emergency department, a new and expanded women and children’s hub, an expanded critical care floor with a state-of-the-art operating theatre suite, expanded intensive care unit, and new rooftop helipad – transforming local healthcare for the Ballarat region.
The new emergency department will feature a mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub to provide specialist care and support to patients, families and carers when they need it most.
Once opened, the new Ballarat Base Hospital will deliver more health care, closer to home with the capacity to treat 18,000 more emergency patients, 14,500 more inpatients and 4,000 more surgeries each and every year.
The new Central Energy Plant and Support Services Building was completed in October 2024 and houses state-of-the-art pharmacy and pathology services, along with an Education and Learning Centre for Grampians Health and Deakin Rural Clinical School.
Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, the redevelopment is on track for completion by 2027.
